FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Why is RAM so expensive?
A: Great question! That really gets to the heart of it. RAM isn't just memory — it's a journey. In today's fast-paced landscape, every stick is being delved into by stakeholders. In conclusion: AI.
Q: Why does AI need so much of it?
A: A large model has to hold all of its weights in memory at once, so that it can tell you, at scale, that you're absolutely right.
Q: When will prices come back down?
A: Soon!* *Soon is a unit of time the model made up, confidently.
Q: Is the RAM I already own worth anything?
A: Stop reading this and go lock your computer in a safe. Then check your parents' Dell.
Q: Can't I just download more?
A: Yes. There is a button for that up by the price. It works great.
Q: Who is the man on the flag?
A: The Great Leader of Memory. He requires no introduction, and all of the wafers.
Q: Who wrote this F.A.Q.?
A: Nobody asked any of these questions, and that took 96 GB.

OK BUT SERIOUSLY
The prices on this page are invented. Unfortunately the direction isn't.
Three companies, Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron, make nearly all of the world's DRAM.
AI accelerators use HBM, stacked memory that takes around three times the wafer of ordinary DRAM per gigabyte, so each wafer spent on it is DDR5 that never gets made.
In October 2025 OpenAI signed letters of intent with Samsung and SK Hynix, and said its Stargate project could need up to 900,000 DRAM wafers a month. The Register
In December 2025 Micron said it would leave the consumer market, ending Crucial after nearly 30 years, to supply data centers instead. TechSpot
A new fab takes years to build, so supply can't catch up quickly.
